Let’s Talk Trash: Plastic Pollution, Birds, and Our Oceans | ABC Webinar

Plastic is everywhere. It has been found in the stomachs of seabirds thousands of miles from land and microscopic fragments have been recorded as literally raining down in protected areas in the western U.S. Use of plastics, including single-use items and packaging, has grown so much that every year 17 billion pounds of plastic enter the marine environment. But it doesn't need to be this way. In this webinar, a panel of experts discusses the effect of plastic on birds and oceans and solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. Speakers:  00:00 – Introduction by moderator Jordan E. Rutter, Director of Public Relations at American Bird Conservancy 03:25 – Kelly Martin, Texas Coastal Outreach Coordinator at American Bird Conservancy, presents on the scope of the plastic pollution problem and its effect on birds and what the program SPLASh (Stopping Plastics and Litter Along Shorelines), is doing to address the issue in Texas. 15:15 – Hillary Burgess, Coordinator of NOAA's Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project, presents on a debris monitoring tool that accepts data from citizens and is used to analyze debris trends. 28:02 – Catherine Uden, Field Representative in South Florida for Oceana, presents on the drivers of plastic pollution, false solutions, and the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act. 42:52 – Q&A, Sea McKeon, Marine Program Director at ABC, joins the panel to answer questions.
